Just a quick reminder that the deadline for stage design proposals in 30th April. Here is the brief for anyone that missed it first time around:

We’ve decided to extend the involvement of artists for Supernormal 2012 to incorporate the construction of a temporary stage at this years’ event. Part site-specific installation, part working stage, this will provide a literal platform for the festival’s live music programme.

In 2011 the 2nd stage was made of a straw bale base with 2 platforms on top providing the floor area of the stage, rough wooden planks, an existing waterproof marquee roof and tarpaulin sides. Any or none of these materials are available to use again.

Please e-mail your proposals in detail with any supporting documentation to: art@supernormalfestival.co.uk

We look forward to hearing your ideas!

The Stage would require the following:

2 stage entrances exits – these could take the form of steps leading up to the stage.

A covered section for artists and equipment – this could take the form of some kind of awning behind or to the side of the stage.

Size: The other stage (Shed Stage) dimensions are: Height: 8 ft Width:16 ft Depth:16 ft. This size is ample to fit a regular band on and would be a good guideline size for any designs.

The people providing the sound set up will also be bringing lighting for the stage (we can find out exactly what this includes).

Things to Consider:

Weather – the stage roof will need to be 100% waterproof to protect electrical equipment.

Cost: We do have some funds in place for on-site construction, but Supernormal has a very tight budget, so being creative with materials is essential. Please bare this in mind when proposing your idea and design and provide as much estimated detail as possible.

The structure will need to be safe and secure.

How long will it take to build? We will be on-site for the week prior to the event itself.

What support and help you will require in constructing it. n.b; we can probably arrange to provide assistance on site.

Consider a possible name for the stage which could incorporate a working title as a piece of artwork in its own right.

We encourage collaborations so please consider the potential of working with another artist in the concept, design and build of the structure.

Braziers Park is an eco site, so the building of the stage needs to create minimum damage to environment.

Please e-mail your proposals in detail with any supporting documentation to: art@supernormalfestival.co.uk

Will Cruickshank’s ‘Swing Harmonograph’ (one of the commissioned works for this year’s SUPERNORMAL Art and Music Festival) carries the artist’s romantic inventions to a typically playful, yet in fact deeply (and literally) moving end. Relationships are at the core of his work – that between viewer and art-object of course, but also between viewers, the actors indeed who make up his audience.

Ostensibly a drawing machine, two people sitting on two swings operate a needle on a separate table, plotting their oscillations and irregularities. In another’s hands this ‘machine’ would bring echoes of lie-detection even torture, but in Cruickshank’s even the variances in the couple’s patterns are celebrated as the ‘Harmonograph’ harmonises every movement, etching each’s trajectory with something akin to love.

The pair of resulting monoprints will be able to be taken away for the price of a ride – a nominal £3 each

There will also be an opportunity to watch ‘SUPERNORMAL: Love Each Other or Die’ (Little Matey Productions documentary short on SUPERNORMAL)

Private views 29th March and FirstThursday 5th April 6 – 9 pm at Studio 1.1, Shoreditch.

Symbiosis is a project dedicated to uncovering the most exciting things going on in new music in 2012.

8 passionate proponents of new music, Supernormal included, have been asked to nominate their favourite unsigned artists. Monthly heats will be held at the Urban Bar in Whitechapel from March until June. The top act from each night will play together at a final in July.

The overall winner will be offered a free recording session at Cafe Music Studios, free PR from CogDiss and, of course, a slot at Supernormal 2012.

Batting for Supernormal are:

Fat Bicth

Fat Bicth (think of talking about large pens with a lisp) describe themselves as party rock. Superficially, they’re something like Trumans Water/ I’m Being Good/ ole’ timey skronk (thrown into a blender/ on acid/ from space/ [>goto: trite/ clichéd comparison]). More realistically, it’s a bit like a melting plastic Iron Maiden (the band and the torture device) thrown into cider-soused spring break parties and made to dance like penguins. But refusing. And I can’t put it more clearly than that.

Rapesbladder

Rapesbladder is probably not right in the head. I’ll tell you one thing, if he was 4, and I was teaching kids, I wouldn’t even give him the play scissors. For a variety of reasons (/mercies), that isn’t the case. There was once an interview with Saint John Peel where he said “I like the idea of Intelligent Dance Music, because it presupposes the existence of stupid dance music”. Rapesbladder might be that. He’s certainly out to make your head feel like you’ve not really got to grips with life and reminding me that fuckstep was a GOOD IDEA.

Mothers of The Third Reich

It’s sort of like metal, except metal kind of failed to make a sound that made you feel like your skin was being peeled away by pointy cockroaches (at least since black metal, circa ’95). They’re definitely a duo, it may well be improvised and it sure as shit sounds improbably like a post-fatal bus accident Sun Ra in a mood to break kittens. The best band you’ve not heard of because you’re too lazy and prioritise things like breathing over listening to Mothers of the third Reich.

You can find a complete list of nominated acts on the Symbiosis website.

SUPERNORMAL offers a platform for visual arts and artists in all disciplines to draw inspiration from its unique ethos and environment. In facilitating an exploration of experimental arts and music in a festival setting, Supernormal puts collaborative and multi-disciplinary arts practice at the heart of what it does, encouraging cross-over and dialogue between these art forms. It provides an innovative forum for artists to present new work and engage with audience directly.

SUPERNORMAL welcomes proposals from individuals, organizations and groups who are excited by the power of collective action in shaping an event whose straightforward aim is to provide an experience that lives long in the memory and is a world away from the cynical, corporate ills that beset our world.

Deadline for Proposals: 31 March 2012

Proposals will be considered and selected on the quality of the idea, showing an understanding of the context and audience for an event that promotes experimental art and music. We will be looking for ideas that offer a different viewing or participatory experience – that engages and inspires thought, is challenging yet accessible.

Things to consider:

How you plan to execute the work

How much time will you need on site

What materials and resources will you need

The weather!

Location

Is it self-supporting

Participation/interaction

How you will facilitate it

Objective Key Words

Engagement, Interaction, Inclusive, Experimental, Artist-led, Collective Action, Collaboration, Dialogue, Discussion, Exchange, Existing Projects, Workshops, Commissions, Spontaneous Process, Performance, Installation., Site-specific

Please send proposals to: arts@supernormalfestival.co.uk

We will get back to you by 30th April 2012 at the latest.

Funding & Resources

Supernormal is a not-for-profit event organized by an unpaid collective of artists and musicians with limited resources in place at present. We are currently working on funding proposals to assist in production costs and expenses but cannot guarantee support at this stage. We encourage artists to source their own project funding where possible and are happy to provide supporting statements.
Participating artists are provided with meals whilst on site and guest tickets, promotion of projects and profiles.

We look forward to hearing from you!
